1Dwarf Coreopsis
This months spotlight is the Coreopsis. Coreopsis is a large genus of over 100 species native to the Americas, tropical African and Hawaii. They are known as tickseed due to the resemblance the seeds have to the insects we know as ticks. Dwarf Coreopsis is one of the 100 species that makes up these genus.
Dwarf Coreopsis are perennials. They are very drought tolerant. Their growth will reach 6 to 8 inches and spread up to 2 ft. They have a showy bright yellow-orange flower that can be seen from spring to fall. It is easy to grow these perennials as a ground cover or border plant.

"The Governor's drought declaration is a loud and clear signal that we are running out of time, and water supplies from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay-Delta are running low,"(Complete Article)

For those who have not heard - on June 4, 2008, California's governor declared a drought in our state, making it clear that the state's water condition is deteriorating and we must increase our conservation practices.
What does that mean for California?
This means that our state might be forced to ration water to cities and regions. A recent bill, which still requires Senate approval, was made to require Californians to cut water 20 percent. This will cause great tension in our agriculture industry. The recent drought declaration includes orders to transfer water from less dry areas to those that are dangerously dry.
Agencies of the Water Authority are making significant investments in developing new local water supplies such as groundwater, recycled water, and desalination, however; we have to make an effort to conserve all the water we can. You can help save water just by doing the following...
  • Water your yard before 8 a.m. to reduce evaporation.
  • Install a smart sprinkler controller.
  • Check you sprinkler system for leaks, overspray and broken sprinkler heads
  • Install mulch around plants to reduce evaporation.

It is our duty to help. If we all talk to our family and friends about saving water and everyone does a little saving, we all benefit.

Visit www.bewaterwise.com for more tips on saving water.
