Fun Halloween Facts..

- The very first Jack-O-Lantern was made up of a turnip. This changed when the Irish Potato Famine prompted people to immigrate to America and the turnip was not as readily available so the pumpkin tiook its place.
- Estimated candy sales for this celebration is $1.93 billion. This makes Halloween the sweetest holiday of the year, not Valentine's Day.
- More than 35 million pounds of candy corn are made. That is equivalent to 9 billion pieces - enough to circle the moon four times if laid end-to-end.

Be prepared!

October is here, once again, and we all remember the fires of last year. Incorporating fire safety measures in our homes is necessary. County of San Diego office of emergency services sent a brochure with some hints and here are a few hints from the guide.

-Be sure to register your mobile phones with the AlertSanDiego emergency notification system at ReadySanDiego.org.
- Create a defensible space. The recommended zone is 100 feet away from buildings or houses. This does not mean total plant clearance but proper trimming of trees and shrubs will help prevent fires from traveling.
- Plant wisely to reduce the risk of a wildfire. All trees and plants will burn but there are plants that do not burn as readily as others.
